If you’re an HR leader, the chances are you’re working on answering the question “do we have the skills and capabilities needed to meet current and future business needs.” Skills determine who we hire, what we pay, what we train, who we promote, and whether or not we can remain competitive. So how do we get visibility of this precious (human) resource?

Internal mobility is making its latest comeback. After we furloughed, laid-off then scrambled to re-hire our way though the last 2 years, we dared to believe 2023 would be a little calmer. Recent economic uncertainty has led to some organizations announcing redundancies and hiring freezes but at the same time, record low unemployment and a reduction in migration means that there is still fierce competition for talent. Forward thinking organizations now realize that traditional avenues to “buy” talent are no longer cost effective or sustainable, and are increasingly looking at ways to maximize their existing talent through internal mobility.

AI is here and it’s going to result in complexities and implications to the workforce. Don’t worry, there's still a crucial role for human skills and expertise but now is the time to prepare.

In 2019, January 31 was the most popular day to quit your job. In 2022, it was January 21. With all the layoffs in the tech industry, who knows if that end-of-January voluntary rush would continue in 2023?
